Hazardous Chemical Substances

(SANAS ACCREDITED)

azardous chemical substances refers to any toxic, harmful, corrosive, irritant orasphyxiant substance or, a mixture of substances, including dusts, fumes, gases, mists and vapours, that may produce adverse health effects in individuals when exposed to sufficient quantities.

The HCS surveys are carried out according to the Hazardous Chemical Substance Regulations, 1995. (Occupational Health & Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993).

We offers the following services:

    • Walk through health risk assessment/ chemical risk assessment (on site).A Chemical Risk Assessment will help employers to identify and manage the risk from chemical exposure, as per the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Substances, 1995. The chemical risk assessment will determine what airborne contaminant needs to be quantified by air monitoring based on the process and material safety data sheets (MSDS).
    • Personal, static and environmental air monitoring for HCS based on the walk through health risk assessment and/or chemical risk assessment.
    • Testing of ventilation controls in place (local exhaust ventilation, fume cupboards etc.)
    • Planning and drafting of chemicalmonitoring programmes.

We do HCS surveys taking into consideration:

    • Compliance with the HCS regulations
    • Protecting the health of the workers
    • Medical surveillance for employees exposed to table 3 substances (HCS Regulations, 1995)
    • Annual reminder to clients for the monitoring for table 1 substances if applicable(HCS Regulations, 1995)
    • Recommending controls in good faith to keep chemical exposures as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP)
